The test is in the eating!

Ours was THE BEST!

No! It was not!!

Secretly ....I think ours was!!!

Baking Bread

We had a wonderful day baking bread and making fruit salad on Friday. Mel and I had divided the grade into groups and each member of the group was responsible for bringing something. Each group made a different bread and there was much fun explaining what was measured in kg/g or l/ml as well as the difference between teaspoons and tablespoons! Group dynamics were tested and eventually the bread came out of the bread makers! What excitement there was to taste their own baking! A really worthwhile teaching day!

Botanical Gardens

On Thursday we took the Grade 2 to Botanical Gardens to concluded the consonant side of the THRASS Chart. We divided the class into groups and each group was led by a Mum (Thank you Mums!) We constructed the experience as a Treasure Hunt using the Thrass words as a guide to explore other areas of the syllabus. The children came dressed up as a character from the Thrass chart. We included maths, afrikaans, movement as well as life sciences! It was a delightful learning experience. We ended up today by having the children make posters about the outing.

Making Jelly

To continue with our water theme we decided to link it with maths. We divided the class into groups and they had to follow the insructions and measure what was needed to make the jelly. The concept of ratio was introduced as well as how many 'ml' in a cup and what half a cup was! When we used the boiling water we discussed steam as a phase of water, as well as the liquid changing into a soild but the best part of all was eating it afterwards!

The Water Cycle

On Friday we had great fun! 'Water' was a word that appeared on our Thrass chart (as well as one of the children's spelling words this week) so Mel and I decided to explore this theme. Firstly we discussed the water cycle and from this the children realised that water is found in three forms. To illustrate this concept we made coloured ice cubes which we gave to the children to place on white paper. We left the ice to melt and then evaporate. The children kept checking on the process and were delighted with the 'pictures' that were created once the water had evaporated leaving the food colouring on the pages.

King of the Day : Daniel

Daniel couldn't wait to share his oral with us and hand out his favourite food ....popcorn. He told us that he had an older brother and sister and another sister ,Rachel, who is at Eden with us. He loves his animals: he has dogs and horses. His Jack Russell loves to hunt and often catches vermin! The children loved hearing about vermin! Well done Daniel for explaining it to them. He loves new toys best of all! He says he can play with them for a long time!

King of the day: Roic

Roic arrived at school armed with a surprise for the class ........but we had to wait patiently until he had said his oral. As a result his oral was done right at the beginning of the day. He had a poster and from this he told us about himself. He clearly loves his animals - he even has a 'ballet cat'! This cat called Izzy comes into his mum's ballet studio and watches all the girls dance! Roic loves to go cycling with his family and I am sure that afterwards they stop and have his favourite junk food ....icecream and chocolates! The class were all delighted when he handed out his favourite treat .......SMARTIES! All the class went happily  out to break shaking their boxes!

Queen of the day: Diya

Diya brought the most beautiful poster to school ...it was so big that it could hardly fit in her car! She spoke using it as her keycards. She told us that when she was born she was so small that her parents bought her dolls' clothes. It is hard to believe now! She is a very special young lady as when her granny had cancer and she used to go with her very week and sit with her while she had chemotheraphy. But now she is very excited because she has been cleared of it. She loves popcorn but she especially loves jewellery and we were all lucky enough to get a little packet of jewels for ourselves (the boys got one too to give to their mums or sisters!)

How good is this?

Friday's Creations : "Me, myself,I"

On Friday the children had such fun creating models of themselves using cardboard photographs, hand and foot prints and fabric! Future textile and clothes designers were evident! See if you can spot them.....

He loves to help his mum bake and to show us what a wonderful baker he wis he brought us each a cupcake to sample - they were delicious. He loves to go camping with his family but also lenjoys the Drakensburg. His best holiday was when he and his family went to Lost City.He is an avid soccer player and a huge supporter of Liverpool. King of the day : Karsten

Karsten surprised us this morning when it came time to present his oral - he had saved pictures on a memory stick and he used them as part of his oral! Modern technology...wow! He has an older sister but has no pets so can't wait for this weekend when he takes Spencer, the class hamster, home for the weekend. Like Andisiwe , he loves to do chores and spends time helping his mother around the house. He showed us pictures of the fun times he has at Ushaka ....... sounds as though he spends busy weekends with his mum , dad and sister.
