Maths Game

Yesterday saw my class involved in "PIG" a maths game. They were in groups and each group had a dice. Each person in the group had a turn to throw the dice. They had to total up their  individual scores and the one who reach a total of 50 first was the winner! If they threw a one they missed a turn. The classroom was a buzz with noise and lots of 'busyness'!!

Purim

What a celebration Purim turned out to be! My class all dressed up as Princes and Princesses - they all looked gorgeous.......

In the hall, Rachael and her brother, Daniel, explained the message of Purim by making us pretend that we were on an aeroplane to Persia  .........

After we had listened to the story, they asked questions and prizes were awarded to children who had listened carefully and could answer the questions correctly. Even Mrs van Elden won .........

After a beautiful parade where Zipho and Mikheeal walked off with the best dressed Grade 2's....

..... it was off to the Red Square to play games that the Grade 6's and 7's had set up. And what fun was had by all.......

More pictures of herb planting!

Valentine Day

What a special day valentine day is! The children all look so beautiful in their red and white....

Planting herbs

As a school we continue to try and encourage recycling and looking after our environment. One of the mini-projects we have decided to embark on this term is growing herbs within our classroom. Mrs van Elden has supplied each class with a tray of seedlings - we have sweet basil! I decided to keep up with the theme of recycling so we cut the tops off 2l coke bottles and filled them with soil and planted the seedlings in them. As I have 20 children in my class they will each get a chance to plant with me at break ....so far we have 11 bottles with seedlings in them! I must say the children love it! Veyakhar even brought some mint cuttings from home that have germinated beautifully! If any parents want to donate a tray of herbs I would love to hear from you so that we can really get a WONDERFUL herb garden going! Here are some pictures of some of the children who have planted with me so far ....

My stars of the week

What super stars I have had this week! Dipika and Veyakhar have continually done beautifully neat and inspiring work, while Utara has become the most 'expressive' reader in the class! Well done my special super stars

My stars of the week ( this week and last week!)

Adenika and Rachael have both been working like STARS! Adenika got everything right in her tests and Rachael did so well in her maths. Both girls are a delight to have in my class as they are responsible, kind and caring! Keep working hard girls.

As for the boys...... Ottie, Augustine and Lukas  ALL got everything right in their test. Augustine ( who speaks Russian as his home Language) did a special oral on himself. He is a really well traveled young man! Well done chaps!

Making Goo

Well I'm back! My studies are eventually finished and my heart is back in the classroom. The year has been a bit disruptive for my class but I must say that I am very proud of the way that they have managed. Thank you Grade 2's for being the special adaptive bunch that you are!

We read " Bad Luck Duck!" which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Duck got stuck in gooey mud so Mel and I decided to make some goo and do some creative writing. It was such a wonderful experience...... mix maizena ,water and a bit of food colouring and guess what you have ......GOO! Some of the expressions were priceless especially the one group of Esihle, Adenika and Yashav..... they had a ball!

But that is not to say that the other groups were any less enthusiastic.......

After packing everything away we spoke about what the goo felt like and many exciting ideas came up........

and one little soul even said that it reminded him of a falling waterfall as it trickled out between his fingers while another piped up that it was 'just like melting wax from a candle' or even 'melting ice-cream'!

A wonderful time was had by all!
