Shopkeeper : Sahil

Sahil brought all his goodies to sell in his shop on Monday but it was only on Tuesday that we managed to open the shop! The children were so enthusiastic that eventually Sahil said that we would not stay open after school - even when they begged!

Amazon Jungle here we come!

Today was just a perfect day to leave Phuket and .......

fly to the .........THE AMAZON JUNGLE!

There was great excitement as they went through passport control once again, got their passports stamped, flew and landed in the amazon jungle!

Once again ,having landed, the children decided on an animal that lived in the jungle and we then moved our classroom around accordingly ....... a family of sloths, a school of piranha, two lonesome panthers, a butterfly, a colony of bats and a green anaconda.

Luckily for us the rain lifted for a few moments so we were on our way to explore THE AMAZON JUNGLE ( For real? asks a little soul!)...

The children had come armed with binoculars, mozzie repellant walking sticks and some sunscreen.

We left the car park and walked down to the varsity fields and pretended that we were in the Amazon! The children played along beautifully.

Mel explaining to the children what animals they had to look out for!

Was that a sloth?

A beautiful feather from a ........toucan?

Looking to find the King Vulture or a Harpy Eagle

Definitely a snake!

They saw the eyes of a panther !

And then of course we saw a real live toad buried in a hole!

All forests are rich in vines ... look how long this one stretches

A resting place!

(Ottie and Connor found out that this bench was erected in the same year as the Tsunami)

A beautiful arch to bid us farewell

And as in the jungle loads of marshy spots!

A special mushroom found as we were leaving
A great start to another exciting fun filled learning experience in grade 2.

Super Squid

This week saw us introduce Jill Eggleton's big book - Super Squid! Having read the story we spoke about the giant squid. We also showed them this video.

We felt that the story lent itself to explore measurement. We looked at the various depths of the oceans and the children were enthralled.......especially with the Twilight and Midnight zone!

After discussing the story Mel and I thought that the children would have fun seeing exactly how huge all these animals were.We presented them with this worksheet .......

We proceeded down to the staff carpark to measure the length of the four creatures in the story namely the whale, the hammerhead shark, the giant squid and lastly the fang tooth fish.

They were absolutely amazed at how big the sperm whale was.........18m WOW!! They discovered a problem when they had to measure the fang tooth as it was only 16cm long! Eventually we decided that it would be best to draw it in our books!
