Baking on Friday

Not only was it Purim on Friday but Mel and I decided that we would like to make crunchy bread with our children - just like 'Carlo' the cook in the book 'Shoo Fly'. It certainly proved to be a challenging exercise ...... the children were all very excited by the festivities that had taken place just before and the bread makers for some reason kept tripping the power ! BUT we did eventually have great fun and the children absolutely loved eating their 'school' made bread!

On Thursday we divided the class into 3 groups as we had managed to scrounge around and get 3 bread makers for each class ( a BIG THANK YOU to the parents who lent us their machines!). We then asked them to sort out who would bring which ingredients. We emphasized team work and how each child had to be responsible and bring whatever they had promised otherwise it would be impossible for them to make bread.

They all brought their items to school and the excitement was tangible! Each group came and made their bread. Sejal was even dressed for the occasion....

We left the bread to bake and under very frustrating circumstances the bread eventually came out looking DELICIOUS!

Now it was time to butter and put their favourite spread on- they just couldn't wait......

What an exciting day Friday turned out to be and to go home after eating hot bread ..... doesn't often happen me thinks!

Purim

What a celebration Purim was! All the children were dressed up for the theme " At the castle".......princesses, princes, knights - we had them all.

Even some teachers join in the celebration!

We all assembled in the hall where Shaked and Talia helped explain to us all about the Festival of Purim.

At the end of the talk questions were asked by Mrs Blog and Kuhle did so well in answering a question correctly and winning a prize!

After that we had a parade which was great fun. Each class went up on stage

and a 'Best Dressed' winner was announced. In our class the winner was.......

Shaked!

We then took our classes onto the field to play games. We all had such fun!

Shoo Fly ( Thanks Mrs Whillier)

This week we are reading another Jill Eggelton book called "Shoo Fly". It is about a chef who is baking some crispy bread and a pesky fly comes to irritate him. In some of the pictures we  see his baking equipment and this got us talking about measuring spoons and whisks amongst other things. Some children were not sure exactly what they were.

Showing us a cup, 1/2 a cup
and 1/4 cup measure.
Well, this morning Kamira arrived at school armed with measuring cups and some flour. She wanted to show us how to make some dough.

Moments like these are really special to me as a teacher..when I know something that we have done in class goes beyond the classroom to spark an interest, just like the frogs from last week! I so appreciate you bringing these to share with us today, Kamira. (the best part was that they couldn't escape and didn't jump!)

In goes the flour
Add the water

Mix it together
There you have it, some
dough

Thank you for bringing this to share with both our class and Mrs Rayners, Kamira. We are hoping to take it a bit further on Friday and bake some crispy bread just like the chef....if we manage to get enough bread makers!
Everybody wanted to feel.

Pupil of the day : Taalia

Taalia was our last pupil of the day so although the class was excited to hear her oral they were sad that there would be no more.

From the words of one of the children, Taalia looked " so very beautiful"
Taalia used the same idea as Kuhle by using the initial letters of from her name:

T : She says that she loves her teacher and she loves school.
A : She went on to tell us about her love for animals. Her favourite were dogs and dolphins.

L : She loves her family. She lives with her mum and dad and her other siblings. Two of her siblings -her brother  in Grade 7 and her younger sister in the Preschool- are also at Eden. She has another sister at home.

I : I was for ice cream which she loves very much.

 :
A: She recently arrived in Durban from Johannesburg where she used to live. She went to Eden College there.
She says she has been made most welcome here at Eden Durban.
She ended her oral off by giving each child a sucker which was her favourite sweet.

I am thrilled that you feel so happy at school Taalia. Here is hoping that you will get happier and happier each day.

And I gave them each a box of smarties!

Well done to my GREAT GRADE 2 SMARTIES
