Not only did we make sandwiches but Siyabonga was our shopkeeper. And what a variety he had in his shop to sell.
I was pleased to see that he was getting better and better with giving change as the morning progressed and by the end of it he was managing all on his own. Well done, Siyabonga. Your shop was well organised and everything was beautifully marked. Thank you.

Tala Game Reserve
My class started off with a short talk on insects
and then it was off into the bush to find them ..
This proved to be a little difficult as it has been so dry but one or two children managed to find termites and even a butterfly..... which they then used to book to identify. They loved it when they found the right butterfly!
Next it was on to see the 'Snake Man'! Oh my word - what wonderful snakes. They all learnt so much - me too! They even had the opportunity to hold them. For some children this was the first time!
After that we all needed a break, so out came the picnic lunches!
Having refreshed, we were ready for the game drive.
We were very lucky in our sightings. JC, our guide, explained many interesting things. These are just a few snippets of what we saw.
A baby zebra ... we learnt that a group of zebras are called a DAZZLE |
The children were fascinated to see Miss Giraffe tongue in real life. |
For many it was the first time to see a giraffe in the wild and what better than a baby! |
We saw Zebras having sand baths ... this one had just finished! |
Blue Cranes - our national bird. |
A typical waterhole. |
We sawthree beautiful Rhino - on World Rhino Day too |
This one had had her horn poached. The story made the Rhino plight for us very real. |
Rhino Dung |
Ostrich chicks with Mum and Dad! |
A baby Hippo - not often that we see them out of the water but we did! We were all very sad to say goodbye but it had been a wonderful day. |
Ons maak toebroodtjies
A few weeks ago, inspired by some of our pupils who planted some beans outside our classroom just for fun, Mel and I planted a whole lot of Lettuce. The children have just loved watching them grow and we have been so impressed by how they have looked after them.
To make the experience even better Sejal brought .... hot chocolate for everyone!
And Ziyaad brought ...... popcorn!
We ended off our lesson by making up a song using the vocabulary that they had learnt. All the children brainstormed and this was what we came up with ....
(to the tune of Fere Jaques)
There was a competition between the classes and we ......... tied! ( according to Mrs McToal!!).
As a result, we decided to use them in an Afrikaans lesson. We taught them the vocab and then set out to make sandwiches in which they could use the lettuce. Some of the children tasted lettuce for the first time!!!
Mel starting off the sandwich making by explaining what they had to do |
Each pair had to share a lettuce. |
We explained how to pinch a leaf off the plant without ruining the plant. |
No wastage was allowed! |
Ons smeer botter op ons brood ! |
Ons sny die brood |
Ek hou van tamaties, kaas en slaai op my brood. |
Ons botter wit brood! |
Ons hou baie van toebroodtjies. |
Dit is lekker |
