Pupil of the day: Theolan

Theolan was so excited about his turn to be pupil of the day that he could hardly contain himself. It was really so sweet to witness!

He started off his oral by taking out two items that surprised the class .... an orange and a carrot! These two turned out to be his favourite food which I agreed with him were my two favourites as well!

He told us that they both gave us Vit C and carrots could help us see better! He gave all the children oranges for break and they were thrilled! They were delicious!

 His favourite DVD was ...

There were many children who agreed with him too!

He absolutely loves horses! He says they are fit and strong and that's what appeals to him the most about them.

The highlight of his talk was when he took out his remote controlled helicopter! It had flashing lights and the everybody's response was WOW or OH MY GOSH or COOL!
The comments had me in giggles ... the delight was contagious!

What a delight it is to have Theolan in my class! We  will work together and make 2014 a magical year. Thank you Theolan for being just YOU!

Stars of the week : Vongai and Geetali

What a treat it was to give these two girls my starts of the week award.

Vongai got absolutely EVERYTHING right in her tests yesterday.... who was more thrilled I am not sure. Keep this up Vongai!

Geetali's work is always so beautifully neat that i thought she really deserved the award ...... and there was no more fitting way but to present it to her on her birthday! Happy birthday Geetali

Pupil of the day: Eva

Eva is our little girl from England who only arrived in Durban in December and I have been thrilled at how well she has adjusted to us all and the different ways we do and say things!

The children absolutely love hearing her speak with her beautiful British accent so you can imagine how delighted they were that it was her turn to do her oral!

She opened up her packet to reveal a beautiful black Labrador teddy whose is named 'Liquorice'! She told us that her mum had bought it for her so that she could cuddle up to it when she missed her real black Labrador 'Wellington' back home.

Her mum had also bought her Jemima puddle duck (I had a little giggle as no-one in our class knew who Jemima  Puddle duck was!I'll have to teach them!)

Eva absolutely LOVES her Ipad. She uses it to play games on as well as take and store photographs. She showed us the game she plays the most.

Her dad lives in England but owns a 'Harley Davidson'. When she was living in England she used to travel on the back of it as there was a special seat for her! What a lucky girl .....the boys were very envious!

She ended her talk explaining her favourite DVD series : Horrible Histories. The children were intrigued. She came up to me afterwards and quietly asked whether we could show them a part of the DVD...... we'll work on it EVA!

Eva we have so loved having you in our class! We learn something new from you every day. Keep just a sweet as you are..... your oral was endearing!

Pupil of the day : Kyle

Kyle is a great basketball fan and we could see that the minute that he walked into class ..... dressed the part holding a basket ball!

He had a beautifully decorated packet which he unpacked throughout his talk.

He spoke about his mum and dad. They are involved in shipping and transport. The children were in stitches when they heard him calling his brother a 'scamp' and he referred to a baby pic of himself as 'that cute boy' Such a delightful sense of humour!

His favourite car is a Lamborghini which he absolutely loves as it is the fastest car in his collection of cars! It is orange!

Once again his sense of humour shone through when he said that he wanted to bring his drum set but it couldn't fit into his packet! We all had a good giggle!

He ended his talk by saying that his favourite food was sushi ( a long discussion was had as he explained what sushi was!) and he wanted to share it with us all but he couldn't resist it and ate it on the way to school!

You spoke so well Kyle. I am excited about spending the year with you and hope that your hugs at the end of the day will continue.

Poggy Frog and the cows

Mel and I have tried to focus on speech marks this week. We had, what we thought was a 'wow' introduction to using speech marks, but things never work out as we would like them too! We blew up a balloon each and in it was a piece of text which was used in the story 'Poggy Frog and the cows'. We blew the balloon until it burst and used two pieces from the burst balloon to illustrate speech marks at the beginning and end of what is being said! The children responded enthusiastically and Mel and I were thrilled..... we thought we had won the jackpot. But it was not to be....... few children really understood and we realized we had lots of work cut out for us! But with practice they will improve.

Here are some of the work that they did.... they traced the frog , wrote a sentence that Poggy said and then used gum paper to place the speech marks...

Pupil of the day : Cameron

Cameron came dressed up as an ardent Pirates soccer supporter!

He had a beautifully decorated packet ..
from which he picked out all the items he needed to do his oral. Thank you for taking such care in decorating your packet Cameron ..... it was great!

He spoke about his family  - his mother ,dad, older brother and sister Brooklyn who is also at Eden. His grandparents live in Pietermaritzburg and they love to visit them over the weekends. They were there this weekend.

He loves to play on his harmonica and after a little persuasion he played us a few notes. The children loved the sound .....some of them even had one themselves!

He has a German Sheppard called Brandy which was trained as a police dog. He says that he will bite anyone who comes into the yard!

He loves soccer and enjoys playing goalie. He and his dad go to Bayview and practice when they can. As I have already said he is a great Pirates supporter.

Cameron's favourite sweets are ...........FIZZERS!

The class were delighted when he handed them out as a treat.

Thank you Cameron for all the effort. We all loved hearing all about you and I'm sure that you will blossom and grow throughout this year...
