'Frog' Outing to Pigeon Valley

We have had a really busy week! As we are reading 'The big wide mouth frog' and 'frog' was one of the words in the THRASS chart this week, we decided to spend two weeks on this book and explore frogs in a little more depth.

Hence we took the opportunity to take learning outdoors. Pigeon Valley is a delightful little park 5 minutes away so it was not difficult to organize.  First we asked the parents to be a little creative and pack a 'frog' throw away lunch! What creative ideas came through ....

Augustine's frog!

Sahil with his treats!

Dipika with her lily pad and rocks!

Veyakhar had flies!
Yeshav had frog jelly!

Kgali made her frog catching a fly!

Connor and his tadpole!

Having listened to a power point on life cycles of frogs we divided the children into groups and we were on our way...

The children came up with the most creative names for their groups : Tiger tree frogs, Nature Frogs, Lightening Frogs etc. Too delightful!

We arrived and ate lunch. Mel and I had thought of 5 different activities : A frog story, Eye spy with ' th,ch,sh words, a movement station where we played leap frog, an insect trail looking for food frogs might eat and lastly an activity around the pond looking at eco-systems and at the tadpoles themselves. Each group had between 5 - 8 min at each activity before we swapped. It was great fun.

At the end of the activities the children were given a choice as to explore the trail to try and find a glimpse of the 'tame -ish' Red Duiker (which we had seen earlier) or stay with Mel and catch tadpoles! If your child came home with a tadpole you know what the choice was! Unfortunately we never found the Red Duiker but the children in my class who went thought that that was the best activity of the day!
