Introducing Continents

This term our theme is centred around three BIG BOOKS written by Jill Eggleton. Mel and I decided that we would start off by introducing the children to the continents.

I did this by dividing the class into 6 groups ( which they chose) and each group was given the name of a continent. We then divided the classroom into two hemispheres by marking the equator with masking tape. The children then moved their desks into the correct spaces by looking at the world map. The children in Australasia had to be in the East below the equator while North America was in the West with one desk straddling the equator! We then filled in the oceans. Each group had to make a label for themselves! They loved it! Mel made awonderful powerpoint presentation which we then  watched.

Next we made a world map. Each group had to first paint the sea.......
North America

Asia

South America

Europe

Africa
We then made little balls (fine motor skills!) using crepe paper and filled in the continents.

Having done this we pasted it all together and made a wonderful wall map for our classroom!

We also visited New Zealand during the week and introduced the children to Jill Eggleton. They were so excited to hear her talk (we found a link to her reading a book that we had read last term) We ended the week off with a you tube clip of 'The Haka' and linked it to the SA vs All Blacks Rugby game happening on Saturday! They all were very excited to watch it live .... Ottie even asked what channel it would be on!

We're off to Australia on Monday where we look at Emus through Jill Eggleton's book ' Another Mother'
