Maths Beach Day

We are introducing multiplication to our wonderful little children so Mel and I  decided to take our classes down to the beach where we could we could explain this concept in a big space with lots of sand to manipulate!

It was a perfect winter's day which made everything so much more enjoyable. We let the children have free play to start with ......

We had split them into groups before we left so they all organised themselves for the morning.

To introduce the concept the children had to get into groups after we called out a number. From there we made the children do various sums using sand balls!

After completing multiplication sums, we moved onto a capacity relay. They had to use a sponge to fill a 200 ml ceres juice container, then use the juice bottle to fill a 500 ml water bottle, the water bottle to fill  a 1 litre milk container and lastly use the milk container to fill a 5 l container. at each stage they had to 'clock' in and tell us how many of each container filled the next one! Loads of children were sent back to start again as they had not measured carefully enough!

We then let the children have lunch and a beautiful dip in the sea!

A worthwhile morning learning outdoors!
